Interested vs. Invested

Continuing in our series: What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

Advice: Are you Interested or are you Invested?  There’s a big difference.

Here’s the big picture:

Whether you’re building a business, working as an employee, in a relationship or training for a marathon, the question really comes down to how committed are you?

13 years ago I quit my full-time job and started my own software business.  I have had ups and downs, great days and horrible days.  I remember leaving my full-time job feeling like I was going to take on the world.   Looking back, I was so clueless and I was such a rookie, but I was invested.    No longer did I have the security of a paycheck rolling in every two weeks.   I had to make a way and figure out how to create revenue.     It was scary, yet completely worth it.

I was in our Easter church service yesterday and our pastor asked the question “Are you interested, or are you invested?”  He was speaking in matters of our faith life and our relationship with God.    This question really stuck with me.    It applies to so many areas of our lives.

Interested People:

  • Won’t take risks
  • Shift their focus
  • Give up easily
  • Quit

Invested People:

  • Take risks
  • Spend time
  • Dig in
  • Keep going

So, which one are you?     How does this apply to you today?
